—PORT BOTANY

RAIL LINE PROJECT

(STAGE 3)

Customers accessing Port Botany in

Sydney can look forward to improved

access and connectivity with a $75

million boost to the line well underway.

Stage 3 of the Port Botany Rail Line

Project, funded by the Australian

Government, will see the track

upgraded to modern standards

by June 2018. More than half of

the scope of works is now complete

including:

1.3km of track reconditioning

6.1km of concrete re-sleepering

5km of new rail

10km of new drainage

2 new retaining structures.

The first phase of the Stage 3 project

is to upgrade the track of the Port

Botany Rail Line to improve access

and connectivity between Port

Botany and the future Moorebank

Intermodal Terminal.

The second phase is to design options

to provide capacity enhancements

for the Southern Sydney Freight Line

and Metropolitan Freight Network.

—ADVANCED TRAIN

MANAGEMENT

SYSTEM (ATMS)

ATMS will revolutionise the way we control trains

with the introduction of digital communications

to replace traditional physical infrastructure.

The system uses wireless, broadband

communications, a centralised and on-board

computer control system and GPS-based

train tracking and control devices to manage

train operations.

This innovative approach will see the end of

the traditional train management system which

uses fixed trackside infrastructure including

signals and circuits.

Progress this year has included varying

ARTC’s rail safety accreditation with the Office

of the National Rail Safety Regulator and in-lab

and track-based testing to bed down system

performance.

Implementation of Stage 1 will see the system

rolled out between Port Augusta and Whyalla

and current planning estimates live operations

commencing towards the end of 2018.

ATMS will vastly improve operations through

increased capacity, operational flexibility,

improved safety and system reliability.
