—OVERVIEW

A firming up of the coal price and continued

diversification on the Hunter Valley network saw

business continue to grow this year. Our network

delivered over 160 million tonnes of export coal

through the Port of Newcastle contributing in

excess of $18 billion to export revenue for the

Australian economy with new record highs for

total coal hauled in a day, a week and a month.

We’re also pleased to have seen a record year for

grain exports through the Port of Newcastle and

we were able to assist our agricultural customers

through delivering efficiency improvements.

We also reached a new approved Hunter Valley

Access Undertaking (HVAU) after an extensive

consultation process. As expected, revenue for

the year was impacted by adjustments due to the

HVAU, largely based on the commercial parameters

regarding rate of return and remaining mine life.

However, by working smarter we’ve saved millions

of dollars and improved productivity while still

being able to deliver a more reliable network for

our customers. These highlights and others are

documented in this section.

—YEAR HIGHLIGHTS

IMPROVING CUSTOMER

SERVICE

Customers can now run faster

and heavier trains between

Muswellbrook and Turrawan after

the completion of our project to

re-rail and upgrade this section

of track, allowing 30 Tonne Axle

Load services across the entire

Hunter Valley network between

Turrawan and the port.

Longer and heavier trains can

also be run on a key section of

the Central North West network

after our assessment of existing

infrastructure and through some

clever train planning. This resulted

in a 30 percent increase in

payload on this section.
