Australian Rail Track Corporation 2013 Annual Report - page 19

Rail dominates this transport corridor
and currently commands a better than
80 per cent share of the land transport
market. The advantages of rail over this
long and inhospitable route are obvious.
It supports both the intermodal freight
and express parcel market. The East West
network also connects the Tarcoola (SA)
to Darwin network (operated by Genesee
Wyoming Australia) to the rest of the nation.
Our key customers on the East West corridor
include Aurizon, Genesee &Wyoming
Australia, Pacific National, SCT (Specialised
Container Transport), Southern Shorthaul
Rail, Qube as well as Great Southern Rail and
NSW TrainLink passenger services.
The strength of the Western Australian and
Northern Territory economies, together
with increased confidence in the reliability
of the rail network, attracted additional
volumes to rail from well known brands.
Seasonal grain services also use this corridor
for transport from regional Victoria and
South Australia to their respective ports.
Record export tonnages (an increase of
approximately 30 per cent on 2011/12) were
recorded through Port Adelaide, SA as a
result of good seasonal rainfall. New hay and
grain freight services commenced between
Horsham and Port Melbourne for export.
Mining companies are increasingly using
the corridor in South Australia and in
December 2012 ArriumMining &Minerals
started moving iron ore from its mine
at Peculiar Knob, 660km northwest of
Adelaide, to Whyalla via our network.
Collectively, IMX Resources, Oz Minerals
and ArriumMining &Minerals increased
the number of services that operate on this
corridor from 8 to 17 paths during 2012/13.
