Newell Highway level crossing upgrade ‘Welcome’

Road users are advised Australian Rail Track Corporation will complete a safety upgrade this week across the Newell Highway at Welcome level crossing, south of Parkes.

Crews will carry out installation of high intensity LED flashing lights and retro-reflective boom gates between 6am this Wednesday 17 June to 5pm Thursday 18 June.

ARTC’s General Manager Asset Management Brian Green said the upgrade is being carried out to improve safety for light and heavy vehicle users.

“The level crossing at Welcome sees an average of 4000 vehicle movements per day of which nearly 1000 are heavy vehicles,” Mr Green said.

“This safety upgrade work will be carried out with changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits in place.

“We thank motorists for their patience as this important safety work is carried out,” Mr Green said.

Transport for NSW is investing $990,000 into the project being delivered by Wabtec on behalf of the Australian Rail Track Corporation.

Upgrade locations funded by the level crossing improvement program are identified through a riskbased, prioritised ranking approach using the Australian Level Crossing Assessment Model, a review of NSW safety incident data and consultation with road and rail infrastructure managers.

Further level crossings are set to be carried out in coming months at targeted locations as part of the Transport for NSW Level Crossing Safety Upgrade program.
