A large percentage of the rail track signals on the North Coast between Gloucester and Casino have now been converted to the advanced LED (Light emitting diodes) system,” David Marchant Chief Executive of Australian Rail Track Corporation Ltd (ARTC) said today.
” Rail operations on the North Coast line will immediately benefit from the new LED signals through far brighter and more visible light from all angles and with significantly increased signal sighting distances. They will also last between 7 to 10 years and use around 70% less energy.” Mr Marchant said.
The new LED signals have been installed at Gloucester, Kendall, Tamban, Glenreagh, Coffs Harbour, Leeville and Casino
“The new LED signals contain approximately 40 individual light sources which reduces the risk of light failure to a negligible level, whereas previously signals on the NSW north coast rail network have used coloured incandescent bulbs to display the signal which worked on the same principle as a household light bulb.” Mr Marchant said
This $181.500 conversion program of the signals to LED formed part of ARTC’s Corridor Capital budget investment.
Further signalling improvements will be implemented in the north as part of ARTC’ s current 3 year $2 billion North South Improvement Strategy focused on upgrades to the North Coast track and associated signalling.
The new LED signals which have already been installed will reduce maintenance costs and provide increased visibility of signals for train operators
